Knobs Under $10 photo by sara ligorria-tramp for ehd | from: how I transformed a dark basement bathroom into a bright modern space There are so many great options in-store and online now, especially at very reasonable price points (there’s a set of 10 for under $20 in our roundups, for instance).įor the three roundups that follow (knobs, bars and pulls), we stuck to a $10 budget and many ended up coming in way under, plus all of these can work equally well in a kitchen, bathroom or on furniture. Anyhow, I don’t regret the decision, and still have those nightstands in my guest bedroom but the point is, you don’t HAVE to spend a ton of money on awesome hardware. If the final look makes you happy (it did) then who cares, but it still feels a little…wrong. Once upon a time, I bought two $40 IKEA Rast chests to use as nightstands and proceeded to spend an additional $300 on brass campaign-style handles for a hack I had up my sleeve…it was like wearing Old Navy ballet flats with a Carolina Herrera gown. The “jewelry” of the kitchen and bathroom feels like it can end up being a huge expense, and look, it can be. photo by sara ligorria-tramp for ehd | from: jess’ genius rental kitchen hack Granted, if you’re an owner, you have a blank check to do whatever you want (but you already know that). The best course of action if you’re a renter is to stick to using the same holes you’ve been endowed, that way when you’re moving out, you just need to screw back on the original handles (be sure to keep them safe and sound…I keep mine in a ziplock bag with the screws in a drawer either right in the same spot or wherever I store all my utility items). She sourced hers from Etsy vendor Forge Hardware Studio for $8 a pop, so for under $50, her cabinetry got a totally reversible makeover. Was it difficult to create? I believe that Google decided to just give the bare minimum support so that the Android devices can be accessed across platforms. It took them a while even to make the app compatible with the macOS Catalina since Apple dropped the support for 32bit apps in Catalina. "I am not sure about what's going on at Google, they haven't been updating the app for so long. Why do you think Google hasn't updated Android File Transfer in forever? From the emails and messages that I get, I understood that I was able to make life easier for a lot of people." If I am taking something for free from the community then I have a responsibility to give it back someday and I was sure that many like me were equally frustrated with the Android File Transfer application. "I have been an advocate for Free and Open Source tools for a long time now and I use at least 5 open-source tools each day. Why was it important to make it an open-source project? Then out of frustration, I decided to write an application for macOS." I still remember those days when I had to use a FTP client to transfer files from macOS to Android. The experience with Google's official AFT was horrible and the other available applications were either too expensive or were too slow. "When I bought a new Macbook, I was pretty shocked to see that Apple didn't have the support for reading a MTP device, which is a pretty basic thing in the other OSes. I asked Rathinavel a few questions about the app, and here are his responses, which are lightly edited for clarity: And, as it turns out, it wasn't a slam dunk from the beginning. Those issues aside, OpenMTP works way better than any solo open-source project should. Also - and this is quite the nitpick for free open-source software - holding shift to select a large number of files in succession does not work as you'd expect it to. Critically, large transfers do work and the speeds were good, hovering above 30 megabytes per second. My OnePlus 8 Pro basically wouldn't work at all, and though the Xiaomi appeared to work fine, it would time out as soon as the screen turned off after 60 seconds. I do have some details to share from my tests with the app: Then install OpenMTP the way you would any other Mac app, and open it. Here’s how the app works: First uninstall AFT as mentioned above, and maybe reboot just for good measure since this is a driver we’re talking about. This open source utility is the work of Ganesh Rathinavel, an Indian software developer who is now an international hero. Luckily I was able to experience the joy of moving it directly to my Mac’s trash can, where it belongs, because there’s a new sheriff town: OpenMTP. Oh, and it also interferes with some other Android interface software, meaning that if you need to do some hacking (as Android users are wont to do), the reason it’s not working is probably because AFT is messing it up.Īs you can probably infer by my tone, I have a lot of, uh, experience with AFT. It glitches out if you have too many files in a directory, it glitches out if the transfer is too large, it glitches out if you look at it the wrong way. The important thing to understand for the non-Android, non-Mac users out there, is that Android File Transfer (AFT) works like shit. Google has only updated the app three times, ever, to keep it working with newer versions of macOS. ![]() See, when Android phones transitioned from connecting to computers via “mass storage,” where the phone just looks like a drive, to MTP, Google made this work with a utility called Android File Transfer. You would think that Google, the company behind the ascension of Android, would have an interest in making it easy to use an Android phone with a Mac, and you’d be wrong. Apple, nearly a decade later, is still too petty to natively support MTP, Android’s file transfer protocol. If you have a Mac and an Android device, you know that transferring files between them is a total nightmare. Update ( 2:09 PM ET): We've updated the story to include some responses to questions we sent Rathinavel via email. ![]() Any antenna that's rated for 50 miles or more will either be a large outdoor unit, or come with an amplifier to boost the signal it gets, if not both. It picked up 41 channels with an astounding 34 of them playing flawlessly. ![]() That said, the front of the antenna has the LED signal indicator lights, so you’ll probably want those facing inside so you can see them.įor us, the Mohu Gateway Plus was incredibly solid. Speaking of reception, the Gateway Plus is designed to be multi-directional, meaning it can be placed forwards or backwards and should be able to still receive a signal. (Which I plan on doing if an when a hurricane eventually makes its way here.) It still looks like an antenna, and it's not exactly inconspicuous, but it's also not the most homely antenna you'll find.Īll in all? Put it in the right location for you and it should serve you just fine.Like our favorite indoor antenna, the Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro, the Gateway Plus can pull in dozens of channels with its 60-mile range and shows you how strong of a signal it’s receiving with its four front LEDs. ![]() It was easy to install, and it'll be easy to take down. There's really nothing bad about this antenna. And the two trouble spots - the CBS and Fox affiliates - are well within the 60-mile advertised range, and don't drop out anymore. But the networks are important for live news and sports. Everything else is just a bonus, and not something we watch very often anyway. HDHomerun is showing 37 channels, but realistically there are just six channels we care about - our local ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and PBS affiliates. I now have more channels - for free - through the antenna than I want to watch. You can dial things in all you want - I just pointed the 2MAX in the right direction, attached 50 feet of coax (the connection has a decent rubber hood on it), ran it into my HDHomerun Connect Quatro, and hoped for the best. Setup was easy, and I get more channels than I need. And the antenna rotates on the mast just fine (don't forget to tighten the U-bolt later, though), so you can adjust things as needed. It pivots, so you can adjust things however you want. A few bolts into the side of the house - along with a nice set of sealing pads to keep wood, water and metal separate - and the mast was up. My problem VHF channels come from that direction, and an indoor antenna on an east-facing window just wasn't getting it done. I decided to mount it just along my roofline, facing west. ![]() Once you see the historical exchange rate graph appear, scroll anywhere along the graph line to see the historical exchange rate for that particular day in that year. We have the same GPIO, microUSB port, dimensions and SoC. The debug port also moved near the SoC to make space for the Wi-Fi antenna.Īs you can see there isn’t really much difference between the original Raspberry Pi Pico and the new Pico W. The new Pico W uses the RT6154A from Richtek as the power regulator instead of the RT6150B in the original Pico design. The buck converter on the Pico W is also changed to meet the new power demands. It’s pin-to-pin compatible with the original Raspberry Pi Pico so existing add-ons or carrier boards should work without modifications. The user LED is now connected to the CYW43439 wireless chip but is still controllable from the RP2040 SDK. The Wi-Fi module and antenna have been added, but other than that, the design is basically the same as the Pico. The Raspberry Pi foundation may enable it in the future through some firmware updates.
